We like to ask yogis questions… So we asked Sarah Campbell-Lloyd about hiking, lunar cycles and her love of teaching yoga.
Sarah Campbell-Lloyd is a 500-hour certified yoga teacher who teaches at vibrant East Sussex yoga studio Yard Yoga. Sarah has been exploring yoga for over a decade, and is particularly inspired by the combination of Alignment and Vinyasa yoga, and their ability to create freedom in the body. Her teaching delivers a lighter, more grounded and present awareness in the body and mind, through synchronisation of breath and movement.
Sarah Campbell-Lloyd will be teaching yoga and meditation on our Full Moon Hike Yoga Retreat in the French Alps, 16-23 July. Click here for more information or email contact@chaletrosiere.fr to request a booking form.
Why do some people not practise yoga on the full moon?
It is generally the Ashtanga community who do not practise yoga on the full moon and new moon, because of the tidal effect the moon has on water. Humans are made of 70% water, and so they believe that the moon has a similar effect on our internal tides, affecting our energy levels, our joints, and our emotional lives.
Why do you think practising yoga on the full moon could actually be a good idea?
I believe that practising on the full moon should be approached slightly differently. If the moon has an effect on us we can choose to celebrate it, with our bodies and our minds. I see yoga practise around this time as celebrating the synchronisation of the solar system with our bodies.
What do you love about teaching yoga?
I love teaching yoga because I know how much freedom it brings. As we practise it’s not just our bodies that become more flexible it’s also our minds.
How would you describe your particular style of teaching?
I always have a theme in mind and use that theme throughout my practise. I flow but am extremely aware of alignment, so my flow is often a little slower than a fast-paced Vinyasa flow. I always like to work with 4 different elements through the class: flow, heat, alignment, and yin, which is a restorative element.
How can yoga complement hiking?
Yoga and walking are two things I would suggest to every person looking to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. The two complement each other greatly. Before a walk yoga helps us set us up for the day, enabling the joints to move freely, and after a hike yoga is essential for restoring tired legs.
What do you hope participants will take away from the Full Moon Hike Yoga Retreat at Chalet Rosière?
I hope Full Moon Hike Yoga Retreat participants will leave feeling lighter and freer, in body, mind and spirit. My aim is to get each participant to connect with him or herself. By connecting with yourself, you become able to see the bigger picture.
